Almamater

AlmaMater is the digital library of old books of the University of Coimbra, represented by a vast collection of works, generally published before 1940, that values important nuclei of the rich bibliographic and documental heritage of the libraries of several colleges of the University. AlmaMater brings together and treasures several existing digital libraries - Digital General Library, Faculty of Law Digital Library, Botany Digital Library and Faculty of Arts and Humanities Digital Library - and others, more recent, such as RÓMULO Digital. It also includes thematic libraries such as the Digital Republic, History of Science, 500 Years| 500 Books and now the Nabais Conde Maps.
Various of these projects were financed by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, the Foundation for Science and Technology and the Ciência Viva Centers Network, in addition to the University's own funds, which values and protects cultural heritage. Promoting effective coordination of efforts, the AlmaMater project was carried out by the Joint Service of Libraries of the University of Coimbra (SIBUC). The content of these digital libraries is already partly integrated into Europeana, the major digital project on cultural heritage, which is the responsibility of the European Union.
